Preserving Heritage, Embracing Innovation: Rische Group's Refurbishment of Manchester Central's Exchange Suite

Manchester Central, a Grade II listed building in the heart of Manchester, was originally constructed in 1963 as Manchester Central railway station. This iconic structure, famous for its historic clock that draws tourists from around the world, required a thoughtful renovation of its Exchange Suite. The brief called for a comprehensive overhaul of their prestigious theatre room—a vital space where conferences and talks regularly welcome business owners, mayors, and other influential city stakeholders. This significant venue serves as a crucial hub where Manchester’s key decision-makers gather to showcase ideas and foster collaboration. Our transformation extended beyond the main theatre to include a complete redesign of the entrance and lobby areas. By reimagining these spaces, we created a more versatile, welcoming environment that better accommodates visitors and enhances the overall experience. The reconfigured lobby now offers flexible zones that support networking, informal meetings, and seamless transitions between events.

Working alongside project partners ZSpace UK, Rische Group embraced the challenge of transforming these dynamic spaces while preserving their historical charm. Our approach incorporated industrial elements that pay homage to the building’s railway origins. Brick slips and copper-coated lighting established an urban aesthetic, while lineage-style flooring and lighting patterns evoke memories of the once-bustling train station. These design choices successfully connected the various areas, fostering a sense of community throughout.

The transformation maintained the building’s historical connection to Manchester while delivering modern functionality required for a conference center. Features include colour-adjustable lighting, palisades, and Hera acoustic panels, creating an industrial exposed ceiling with superior acoustic properties and distinctive design elements.

The Rische Group team successfully completed this ambitious project within budget and met the tight 28-day schedule, demonstrating our exceptional project management capabilities and commitment to excellence.
